WHO WE ARE

Julia Day

Associate

As an Associate for PPS’s “Diversifying Public Markets and Farmers Markets” 2006 funding initiative, Julia helps coordinate the funding of individual public and farmers’ markets and market networks and associations in the U.S. and Canada. Through this program, grant recipients will further their work to alleviate food insecurity, build local economy, increase participation of customers with low-incomes through FMNP and EBT access, and create vital community spaces and destinations. Julia’s interest in working with markets as catalysts for community building evolved from her initial work at PPS researching farmers markets with innovative projects and partnerships, ranging from collaborating with health clinics, to preserving open spaces, to working with youth to educate their peers about access to healthy, culturally appropriate, local food.

In the fall of 2005 Julia helped coordinate PPS’s 6th International “Great Markets, Great Cities” Public Markets Conference, October 28-31st in Washington, DC, which brought together over 250 people involved with markets in 10 countries. Her past experience with farmers markets includes selling apricots for Pipitone Farms at Pike Place and other markets in Seattle, WA.

Julia developed an interest in working with communities to use their own resources and knowledge to address communal issues while working as the Missouri Coordinator for the League of Independent Voters, an organization committed to grounds-up activities. She worked with young organizers to survey their communities, create and distribute voter guides, and mobilize new voters to hold elected officials accountable.

As a native New Yorker, she has always loved the energy created on sidewalks and subways and is excited to contribute to making vibrant urban spaces.
